Unmarried biological, step-children and adopted children are eligible for TRICARE until age 21. At age 21 or 23, he or she may qualify to purchase TRICARE Young Adult. Eligibility may extend beyond these age limits if he or she is severely disabled.

An incapacitated child (incapable of self-support) may be eligible for premium-free benefits after age 21 if he or she meets the criteria. If a child is unable to support themselves due to a severe mental or physical disability they are eligible, regardless of the marital status of the parent. Their disability must have occurred prior to the loss of eligibility. And their sponsor must be responsible for more than 50 percent of their financial support.

Thanks to one of our proactive parents on our advocacy committee, "Conner's Law", was a bill created by Sharon and Conner Cummings and was passed into law in 2015. This law protects permanently disabled children of divorce in the state of Virginia. Permanently disabled children do not age out of child support. Support is permanent.

Children are eligible for SBP payments as long as they are unmarried, under age 18, or under age 22 if still in school. A child who is disabled and incapable of self-support remains eligible if the disability occurred before age 18 (or before age 22 if a full time student).

The VA pension also benefits dependents and survivors. For instance, a surviving spouse of a veteran is eligible for an Aid and Attendance benefit of up to $1,055 a month.
